About York

Known for

The Shambles, York Minster, the city walls, Micklegate, the Jorvik Viking Centre and a medieval street plan that still works 2,000 years after the Romans laid it out

A little history

Founded by the Romans as Eboracum in 71 AD, captured by the Vikings who called it Jorvik. One of the most complete medieval cities in northern Europe, with walls, bars and streets largely intact. Constantine was proclaimed Emperor here.

Local tip

Walk the city walls at dawn before the tourists arrive. Fossgate and Gillygate for independent restaurants. The Shambles is worth seeing once — then escape to Micklegate for real York life. Bishy Road (Bishopthorpe Road) on a Saturday.
