About Workington

Known for

The steel heritage (the last remaining integrated steel rail-making plant in the UK), the Workington Hall ruins, and a Cumbrian port town with steel-making significance

A little history

Workington has been one of Britain's most important steel towns — Corus (now Tata Steel) has been the last remaining integrated rail steel-making plant in the UK. Mary Queen of Scots landed at Workington on her flight from Scotland in 1568. Workington Hall, where she was received, is now a ruin.

Local tip

Mary Queen of Scots' landing is marked locally. Workington Hall ruins for the historic connection. The coast for the Solway Firth views. The town centre for local community character.
