About Woking

Known for

The first mosque in England (Shah Jahan Mosque, 1889), H.G. Wells's connection (The War of the Worlds is set in Woking), the Victoria Arch, and a Surrey commuter town of surprising historical depth

A little history

The Shah Jahan Mosque in Woking (1889) was the first purpose-built mosque in the United Kingdom. H.G. Wells was living in Woking when he wrote The War of the Worlds — the Martians land at Horsell Common. The town has significant Victorian heritage. The Lightbox gallery is excellent.

Local tip

The Shah Jahan Mosque is historically extraordinary — the oldest mosque in Britain. Horsell Common for the War of the Worlds connection. The Lightbox gallery for art. The town centre for independent food.
