A little history

Windermere the lake is 10.5 miles long — England's largest. The town grew as a Victorian railway terminus when the line arrived in 1847, transforming what had been a remote farming community

Local tip

Walk to Orrest Head first thing — 20 minutes and one of the greatest views in England. Bowness is busy but has good food. Take the ferry across to Far Sawrey for Beatrix Potter's Hill Top farm.
