A little history

Winchester was the capital of England before London. Alfred the Great is buried here. William the Conqueror was crowned in Winchester Cathedral, which he built between 1079 and 1093

Local tip

Walk the water meadows south to St Cross Hospital — a medieval almshouse still functioning as it did in the 15th century. The Saturday farmers' market is exceptional. Parchment Street for shopping.
