About Wigtown

Known for

Scotland's National Book Town (with more bookshops per capita than anywhere in Scotland), the Wigtown Book Festival (one of Scotland's finest literary festivals), the Martyrs' Memorial, and a small Galloway town of extraordinary literary significance

A little history

Wigtown was designated Scotland's National Book Town in 1998 — the town now has numerous independent bookshops in a village of under 1,000 people. The Wigtown Book Festival, held every autumn, is one of Scotland's finest literary events. The Martyrs' Memorial commemorates two Covenanting women drowned in the Solway in 1685.

Local tip

The bookshops are genuinely excellent — The Bookshop is a wonderful indie. The Book Festival in late September. The Martyrs' Memorial for the Covenanting story. The Solway estuary views.
