About Wick

Known for

Wick Heritage Museum (the finest herring fishing museum in Scotland), the Caithness Glass visitor centre, the Castle of Mey (Queen Mother's home nearby), and the most northerly mainland town in Scotland with significant herring heritage

A little history

Wick was once the world's busiest herring port — in the 1860s, over 1,000 boats worked from the harbour. The Wick Heritage Museum, run entirely by volunteers, is the finest fishing museum in Scotland. Caithness Glass has been made here since 1961. The Castle of Mey — the Queen Mother's home — is 18 miles away.

Local tip

The Wick Heritage Museum is genuinely extraordinary and free — the scale of the herring fishing industry is astonishing. Caithness Glass for the glassblowing. The Castle of Mey for the Queen Mother's home. The Caithness coast for the dramatic cliffs.
