About Whithorn

Known for

The earliest Christian site in Scotland (St Ninian founded his Candida Casa here in 397 AD), the Whithorn Dig (the most important early Christian archaeological site in Scotland), and a small Galloway village of extraordinary religious heritage

A little history

St Ninian built the Candida Casa (White House) at Whithorn in 397 AD — making it the earliest recorded Christian site in Scotland, predating Columba's Iona by 165 years. The Whithorn Dig has uncovered extraordinary early Christian material. The priory ruins are significant. Two pilgrimages to Whithorn were worth one to Rome.

Local tip

The Whithorn Story visitor centre is excellent — the archaeology is genuinely significant. The priory ruins. The Isle of Whithorn for the atmospheric harbour. The Galloway walking.
