About Whitehaven

Known for

The Georgian planned town (one of the finest in northern England), the harbour (where John Paul Jones attacked in 1778 — the last foreign attack on mainland Britain), and a Cumbrian port town of remarkable historical depth

A little history

Whitehaven was a planned Georgian town — one of the finest outside London — built to export coal and import tobacco from Virginia. In 1778, American privateer John Paul Jones raided the harbour — the last hostile foreign attack on mainland Britain. The town has extraordinary Georgian architecture. The Rum Story museum tells the trading heritage.

Local tip

The Georgian streets are genuinely beautiful. The Rum Story museum is excellent. The harbour for the John Paul Jones connection. The Cumbrian Coast Railway for the scenic journey.
