A little history

A Norse settlement, then a major fishing port and whaling base. Captain Cook apprenticed here. Bram Stoker visited in 1890 and set Dracula's English arrival here. The 13th century Abbey ruins on the clifftop are among England's most dramatic.

Local tip

Church Street on the east side before the coaches arrive. Sandgate for fish and chips — Magpie Café or the Quayside. The 199 steps at dusk. The weekly market.
