A little history

Gibside — a Georgian pleasure ground created by George Bowes in the 18th century and now managed by the National Trust — is one of the finest ruined landscapes in England, with a Palladian chapel, walled garden and mile-long tree-lined avenue. Whickham village has good community character.

Local tip

Gibside is genuinely extraordinary and often uncrowded — the avenue, the chapel and the wilderness are outstanding. The Derwent Valley walk. The community has good local character.
