About Wells-next-the-Sea

Known for

The beach (Holkham Beach is arguably the finest in England — the National Trust's vast sand backed by pines), the harbour, the whelks (Wells is famous for its seafood), and a North Norfolk harbour town of outstanding natural beauty

A little history

Wells-next-the-Sea was a significant port for centuries, trading with the Baltic. Holkham Beach — a vast expanse of sand with pine forest backed by salt marsh — is one of England's great natural places, owned by the Coke family of Holkham Hall. The town's whelk stalls have been selling seafood for generations.

Local tip

Holkham Beach is genuinely extraordinary — the scale of the sand and the pine backdrop are magnificent. The Wells harbour for whelks and fresh seafood. Holkham Hall for the Palladian mansion. The narrow gauge railway to the beach.
