The Battle of Wednesfield in 910 AD — where the Mercians and West Saxons, led by Edward the Elder and Aethelflaed, Lady of the Mercians, decisively defeated the Vikings — was one of the most significant battles in English history. The town grew as a lock and key manufacturing centre. Wednesfield is part of the City of Wolverhampton.
