About Watchet

Known for

The Ancient Mariner connection (Coleridge wrote The Rime of the Ancient Mariner after visiting), the harbour, the Flatner boats, and a small Somerset harbour town of literary and maritime heritage

A little history

Samuel Taylor Coleridge visited Watchet harbour in 1797 and was inspired to write The Rime of the Ancient Mariner — there is a statue of the Mariner on the quayside. The town has been a port since Saxon times. The last local Flatner boats — traditional flat-bottomed fishing vessels — were built here.

Local tip

The Mariner statue is charming and the harbour beautiful. The West Somerset Railway from nearby Minehead. The Watchet Museum for the maritime heritage. The cliff walks above the town.
