About Warrenpoint

Known for

The Narrow Water Castle, the Carlingford Lough, the 1979 Warrenpoint ambush (the deadliest day for the British Army in the Troubles), and a County Down town on the Irish border

A little history

Warrenpoint suffered the deadliest day for the British Army in the Troubles — the Warrenpoint ambush of 27 August 1979 killed 18 soldiers, the same day Lord Mountbatten was killed in Sligo. The town sits on Carlingford Lough, the beautiful sea inlet between Down and Louth. Narrow Water Castle is a picturesque 16th century tower house.

Local tip

Narrow Water Castle for the picturesque tower on the lough. Carlingford Lough for the beautiful water scenery. The town centre for local character. The border location gives access to Carlingford village (excellent food) in the Republic.
