About Warminster

Known for

Longleat (one of England's greatest stately homes and the first safari park in Britain outside Africa), the garrison town heritage, and a Wiltshire town at the gateway to the Longleat Estate

A little history

Longleat House — completed 1580, owned by the Marquess of Bath — opened Britain's first drive-through safari park in 1966. The House has magnificent state rooms. Warminster is a garrison town — Battlesbury Hill and Scratchbury Hill are impressive Iron Age hillforts. Cley Hill is an extraordinary geological and prehistoric site.

Local tip

Longleat is genuinely extraordinary — the safari and the house are both outstanding. Cley Hill for the Iron Age hillfort and views. The town centre for local character.
