About Wareham

Known for

The Saxon town walls (the most complete in England), the River Frome, Lawrence of Arabia's connection (his cottage at Clouds Hill is 4 miles away), and a Purbeck gateway town of extraordinary Saxon and Lawrencian heritage

A little history

Wareham's Saxon town walls — built by Alfred the Great in the 9th century — are the most complete in England, still enclosing the town on three sides. T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) lived at Clouds Hill, 4 miles away, and is buried at nearby Moreton. The town is the gateway to the Purbeck Hills and Isle of Purbeck.

Local tip

The Saxon walls walk is excellent — genuinely one of England's finest. Clouds Hill (NT) for Lawrence of Arabia's cottage. Moreton churchyard for Lawrence's grave. The Frome riverside walk.
