About Wantage

Known for

The birthplace of King Alfred the Great (the only English king to be called 'Great'), the King Alfred's Kitchen, the Vale of the White Horse, and a beautiful Oxfordshire market town of royal significance

A little history

King Alfred the Great — who saved England from the Vikings, reformed the law, promoted learning and arguably created the English nation — was born in Wantage in 849 AD. The town celebrates its royal connection proudly. The Vale of the White Horse — named for the prehistoric Uffington White Horse on the Downs — surrounds the town.

Local tip

The King Alfred statue in the market place. Uffington White Horse (NT) is 7 miles — genuinely extraordinary. The Ridgeway National Trail for walking. The town for independent food.
