A little history

Wallsend marks the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall — Segedunum Roman Fort ('the strong fort') was the easternmost fort on the Wall. The Segedunum Museum, with its reconstructed bath house and tower, is excellent. Swan Hunter shipyard — which built some of the world's most famous ships including the Mauretania — was based here.

Local tip

Segedunum Roman Fort is genuinely excellent — the tower gives extraordinary views. The bath house reconstruction is outstanding. The Hadrian's Wall coastal path from Wallsend.
