About Ullapool

Known for

The ferry to Stornoway (the main Outer Hebrides crossing), Summer Isles views, the Ullapool Museum, and a remote Highland fishing village of extraordinary natural beauty at the foot of the Northwest Highlands

A little history

Ullapool was founded in 1788 as a planned fishing village by the British Fisheries Society. The ferry to Stornoway (Lewis) makes it the main gateway to the Outer Hebrides. The surrounding Northwest Highlands — Beinn Mòr Coigach, An Teallach, Stac Pollaidh — is some of the wildest scenery in Britain.

Local tip

Stac Pollaidh for an outstanding short hill walk with extraordinary views. The Summer Isles for the boat trip from Ullapool. The Ullapool Museum. The village for excellent local seafood.
