About Toomebridge

Known for

The Toome Eel Fishery (the world's largest eel fishery by catch, operating since the 7th century), the River Bann, and a small Antrim village of extraordinary ecological significance

A little history

Toomebridge has been the site of eel fishing on the lower Bann since the 7th century — the fishery is one of the most ancient continuous fisheries in the world. The eels migrate from the Sargasso Sea to the Bann, a journey of thousands of miles. The fishery has recently declined due to European eel population collapse.

Local tip

The Eel Fishery heritage is extraordinary. The River Bann for local walking. Lough Neagh nearby for the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles.
