A little history

Tonbridge Castle's gatehouse — built around 1260 — is one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture in England, virtually intact. Tonbridge School, founded in 1553, is one of England's great public schools. The town sits on the Medway with good walking.

Local tip

The Castle gatehouse (free exterior, paid interior) is genuinely magnificent. The Medway riverside walk. The town centre for good independent food. The local antique and independent shops.
