About Thurso

Known for

The most northerly town on the British mainland, the Pentland Firth (one of the most powerful tidal currents in the world), the Dounreay nuclear site, the surfing (Thurso East is one of Europe's finest reef breaks), and a remote Highland town at the top of Britain

A little history

Thurso is the most northerly town on the British mainland. The Pentland Firth — between Thurso and Orkney — has one of the most powerful tidal currents in the world and is being harnessed for tidal energy. Thurso East produces world-class surfing waves. The Dounreay nuclear site, now being decommissioned, dominated the 20th century.

Local tip
