A little history

The county town of Somerset since the medieval period. The castle was built by the Normans and is where Judge Jeffreys held the Bloody Assizes after Monmouth's Rebellion in 1685. The Somerset Levels surrounding the town are a unique landscape.

Local tip

The Saturday market in Taunton is excellent for Somerset produce — cider, cheese and cider brandy. The cricket ground is beautiful even if you don't follow cricket. East Street for independent food.
