A little history

Tamworth was the royal capital of Mercia — the most powerful Anglo-Saxon kingdom — in the 8th and 9th centuries. Aethelflaed, the Lady of the Mercians, made it her capital. Tamworth Castle — built on a Saxon motte — still commands the town. Robert Peel, founder of the Metropolitan Police, was MP for Tamworth.
