The birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough (one of England's greatest painters), the Gainsborough's House museum, the River Stour (Constable Country), and a Suffolk wool town of great artistic heritage

A little history

Thomas Gainsborough — the great 18th century portrait and landscape painter — was born in Sudbury in 1727 and grew up in the town. Gainsborough's House, his birthplace, is now an excellent museum and gallery. The River Stour — which Constable also painted downstream — flows through the town.

Local tip

Gainsborough's House is genuinely excellent — the collection and the restored house are outstanding. The Stour Valley walk from Sudbury. The market for local Suffolk produce.
