About Stranraer

Known for

The former ferry to Northern Ireland (Stranraer was the main Larne crossing for a century), Castle Kennedy Gardens (one of Scotland's finest), and the main town of the Rhins of Galloway peninsula

A little history

Stranraer was the main ferry port for Northern Ireland for over a century — the Larne crossing carried millions of passengers. The ferry moved to Cairnryan in 2011. Castle Kennedy Gardens — the historic landscape of the Earls of Stair — is one of the finest in Scotland. The town is at the head of Loch Ryan.

Local tip

Castle Kennedy and Lochinch Castle Gardens are genuinely outstanding — the rhododendrons in May are spectacular. Loch Ryan for watersports. The town centre for local character.
