About Stornoway

Known for

The capital of the Outer Hebrides (Lewis and Harris), the Lews Castle (a Victorian baronial castle), the An Lanntair arts centre, the Harris Tweed industry, and the gateway to some of Scotland's most extraordinary landscape and culture

A little history

Stornoway is the only significant town in the Outer Hebrides — the administrative, commercial and cultural hub of Lewis and Harris. Lews Castle, built in 1847, was given to the community in 1923 by Lord Leverhulme. Harris Tweed — the hand-woven cloth protected by Act of Parliament — is produced across the islands.

Local tip

The An Lanntair arts centre for the best of Hebridean culture. The Lews Castle Museum for the extraordinary Lewis Chessmen story (medieval chess pieces found here). The Callanish Standing Stones are 14 miles away — genuinely extraordinary.
