About Stonehaven

Known for

Dunnottar Castle (the most dramatically sited castle in Scotland, a cliff-top ruin), the Hogmanay fireball ceremony (one of Scotland's most extraordinary fire festivals), the harbour, and a beautiful Kincardineshire fishing town

A little history

Dunnottar Castle — perched on a dramatic sea-cliff stack — is one of Scotland's most iconic ruins. The Scottish Crown Jewels were hidden here from Cromwell's army in 1651. Stonehaven's Hogmanay fireball ceremony — where participants swing blazing balls through the town — is one of Scotland's most extraordinary traditions.

Local tip

Dunnottar Castle is genuinely extraordinary — the clifftop approach is dramatic. The Hogmanay fireball ceremony (31 December) is spectacular. The harbour for fresh Aberdeenshire seafood. The beach for the North Sea coast.
