About Stockton-on-Tees

Known for

The world's first railway passenger service (the Stockton and Darlington Railway, 1825), the High Street (at its Victorian peak, the widest in England), the Tees Barrage, and a Teesside town that launched the railway age

A little history

On 27 September 1825, the Stockton and Darlington Railway carried its first passengers — the world's first regular steam passenger service. The railway transformed the world. The High Street — once the widest in England — retains impressive Victorian architecture. The Tees Barrage is a dramatic modern river structure.
