A little history

Stirling has been the key strategic point in Scottish history — controlling the lowest crossing of the Forth. Stirling Castle was the favoured residence of the Scottish royal family. William Wallace defeated the English at Stirling Bridge in 1297; Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn in 1314. The Wallace Monument towers above the town.

Local tip

Stirling Castle is genuinely magnificent — the Great Hall and the Royal Chapel are outstanding. The Wallace Monument for the dramatic hilltop view and William Wallace's broadsword. Bannockburn Heritage Centre for the 1314 battle. The Old Town for excellent independent food.
