A little history

Stevenage was the first New Town designated under the 1946 New Towns Act. The town centre — built from 1959 — was the first purpose-built pedestrian shopping precinct in Britain. The town has significant aerospace and pharmaceutical industries, including GlaxoSmithKline.

Local tip

The town centre pedestrian precinct is historically significant — the first of its kind in Britain. The Old Town for the historic market character. Knebworth House is close for the rock concerts and the house.
