About Stamford

Known for

The finest stone town in England (more than 600 listed buildings, almost all of honey-coloured limestone), the Stamford Baron area, Burghley House (one of the greatest Elizabethan mansions), and a Lincolnshire town of extraordinary architectural completeness

A little history

Stamford was so complete and unspoilt by the 1960s that it became the first conservation area in England, in 1967. The town's honey-coloured limestone buildings — medieval churches, Georgian townhouses, coaching inns — are virtually unchanged. Burghley House, built for William Cecil, Elizabeth I's chief minister, is one of England's greatest Elizabethan mansions.

Local tip

The town centre is extraordinary — walk every street. Burghley House and park are magnificent. The Stamford Arts Centre. The George Hotel for the best coaching inn experience in England.
