A little history

St Ives has been a fishing port since at least the 10th century. The artist colony began in the 1880s when painters came for the extraordinary light, eventually leading to the Tate St Ives opening in 1993

Local tip

Porthminster Beach Café for a proper meal. The Tate is worth it even if you're not an art person. Visit mid-week or off-season — it's completely different without the crowds.
