About St Davids

Known for

Britain's smallest city (by population, with cathedral status since the 6th century), St Davids Cathedral (the finest in Wales, burial place of Wales's patron saint), the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, and a city the size of a village in the most dramatic coastal setting

A little history

St Davids has been a place of pilgrimage since the 6th century — St David, patron saint of Wales, founded his monastery here around 550 AD. Two pilgrimages to St Davids were worth one to Rome. The Cathedral, begun in 1181, is the finest in Wales. St Davids gained formal city status as recently as 1994.

Local tip

The Cathedral is genuinely magnificent — the nave ceiling, St David's shrine and the atmospheric setting are extraordinary. The Bishop's Palace ruins (free). The Pembrokeshire Coast from the city — Whitesands Bay is 2 miles. The cathedral city atmosphere is unlike anywhere in Britain.
