About St Austell

Known for

The Eden Project (the world's largest indoor rainforest and one of Britain's most visited attractions), the china clay heritage (the moon-like clay tips), the Lost Gardens of Heligan, and a Cornish town reborn through extraordinary environmental tourism

A little history

St Austell was the heart of Cornwall's china clay industry — the huge white clay tips that still mark the landscape gave the area the nickname 'The Cornish Alps'. The Eden Project, opened 2001 in a former clay pit, has attracted over 20 million visitors. The Lost Gardens of Heligan were rediscovered in 1990.

Local tip

The Eden Project is genuinely extraordinary — the biomes are remarkable. The Lost Gardens of Heligan are beautiful and often quieter. The china clay landscape around Roche and Bugle for the dramatic 'moon country'.
