About Slough

Known for

Slough Trading Estate (the largest industrial estate in Europe under single ownership), Herschel's discovery of Uranus (from a Slough garden in 1781), the BBC TV sitcom The Office, and a Berkshire town that transcended its satirical reputation

A little history

William Herschel discovered Uranus from his garden in Slough in 1781, using a telescope he built himself. The Slough Trading Estate — established in 1920 — became the largest under single ownership in Europe. John Betjeman's famous 1937 poem 'Slough' ('Come, friendly bombs, and fall on Slough') gave the town a reputation it has long since transcended.

Local tip

Herschel Museum of Astronomy is genuinely excellent — the man who doubled the known solar system. The Curve arts centre for culture. The extraordinary diversity of independent food in the town centre.
