A little history

Sidmouth became fashionable when the Napoleonic Wars closed the Continent — the Regency seafront developed between 1800 and 1830 is one of the finest in England, virtually unchanged. The Sidmouth Folk Festival, held every August, is one of Europe's finest, attracting performers from across the world.

Local tip

The Regency seafront is genuinely beautiful — the unaltered 19th century architecture is extraordinary. The Folk Festival in August is outstanding. The coastal path for the red Jurassic Coast cliffs. The town for excellent independent shops.
