About Shipley

Known for

Saltaire (the UNESCO World Heritage Site Victorian model village), the 1853 Gallery (Hockney, Lowry and Yorkshire art), the River Aire, and a West Yorkshire town adjacent to one of England's greatest Victorian social experiments

A little history

Saltaire — the model village built by Titus Salt from 1851 — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest Victorian planned communities in the world. The 1853 Gallery in the Salt's Mill houses the world's largest collection of David Hockney's work. Shipley is the adjacent town.

Local tip

Salt's Mill and the 1853 Gallery are genuinely extraordinary — the Hockney collection alone is worth the trip. Saltaire village for the Victorian planned community. The River Aire walk.
