About Selby

Known for

Selby Abbey (one of the finest Norman abbeys in England, still functioning as a parish church), the Selby Coalfield heritage, and a Yorkshire market town of great ecclesiastical significance

A little history

Selby Abbey — founded in 1069, the year after the Conquest — is one of the finest Romanesque and Early English churches in England and one of the few surviving as a parish church rather than a ruin. Henry I was born in Selby in 1068. The Washington Window in the abbey is said to have inspired the American flag.

Local tip

Selby Abbey is genuinely magnificent and free — one of the finest churches in Yorkshire. The Washington Window for the American flag connection. The market for local Yorkshire produce.
