About Seaham

Known for

The sea glass beach (one of the world's finest), Lord Byron's marriage here, the colliery heritage, the Terris Novalis sculpture, and a Durham coastal town of unexpected beauty

A little history

Seaham grew around the harbour built to export coal. Lord Byron married Annabella Milbanke at Seaham Hall in 1815. The beach, covered in frosted glass from old bottle works, has become a world-famous sea glass destination.

Local tip

The beach for sea glass — bring a bag, you'll fill it in an hour. The Terris Novalis sculpture by Antony Gormley on the colliery site is extraordinary.
