A little history

Salford was once the beating heart of the industrial revolution's cotton trade — the docks handled cotton from across the Empire. The docks closed in 1982. MediaCityUK transformed the area: the BBC, ITV and many media companies now base operations here. The Lowry — celebrating the matchstalk men painter — opened in 2000.

Local tip

The Lowry is free and excellent — the L.S. Lowry collection is outstanding. MediaCityUK tours available. The Salford Quays waterfront walk. The Peel Park for the Victorian parkland.
