About Rugby

Known for

The birthplace of rugby football (William Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it at Rugby School in 1823), the Rugby School, the World Rugby Hall of Fame, and a Warwickshire town of global sporting significance

A little history

William Webb Ellis reputedly picked up a football and ran with it at Rugby School in 1823 — creating the sport of rugby football. The story may be largely myth but Rugby has embraced it magnificently. The World Rugby Hall of Fame is at the school. The town is also a significant engineering and technology centre.

Local tip

The World Rugby Hall of Fame at Rugby School is genuinely excellent. The William Webb Ellis statue. The town centre for good independent food. The Rokeby Arms and other rugby-heritage pubs.
