About Royston

Known for

The Royston Cave (a mysterious medieval cave carved with extraordinary religious and pagan symbols), the Ermine Street crossing, and a Hertfordshire market town with an unsolved historical mystery

A little history

Royston Cave — discovered in 1742 — is a small underground chamber carved with extraordinary bas-relief symbols including a Crucifixion, a Wheel of Fortune, a beheaded figure and numerous other carvings. The cave's origins remain disputed — possibly Templar, possibly pre-Reformation. The town sits at the junction of two Roman roads.

Local tip

The Royston Cave is genuinely extraordinary and mysterious — one of England's great historical puzzles. The town centre for local shopping. The Roman road crossroads for history. The market for local Hertfordshire produce.
