About Ross-on-Wye

Known for

The Wye Valley gateway (the Wye Valley AONB begins here), the Market Hall (a magnificent 17th century building), John Kyrle (the 'Man of Ross' celebrated by Alexander Pope), and a Herefordshire market town of great beauty

A little history

Ross-on-Wye was celebrated by Alexander Pope as the home of John Kyrle — the 'Man of Ross' who beautified the town at his own expense in the early 18th century. The Market Hall — built 1674 — stands on sandstone pillars in the market place. The Wye Valley AONB begins here.

Local tip

The Market Hall is magnificent. The Wye Valley walk from Ross is outstanding — one of England's great river walks. The Prospect Gardens for the best Wye views. The town centre for good independent food.
