A little history

Romney Marsh was reclaimed from the sea during the Middle Ages. The landscape is extraordinary — flat, windswept and dotted with isolated medieval churches. Dungeness — a vast shingle headland — is one of the most alien landscapes in England. The RH&DR (1927) is one-third scale and runs 13 miles along the coast.

Local tip

The RH&DR miniature railway is genuinely charming. Dungeness for the most extraordinary coastal landscape in England — the lighthouses, the fishermen's huts, Derek Jarman's garden. The isolated churches are outstanding.
