A little history

Rochester Cathedral — founded in 604 AD — is the second oldest cathedral foundation in England. The Norman castle keep, built in 1127, is one of the finest in the country. Charles Dickens lived nearby at Gad's Hill and set much of his work in Rochester — Great Expectations, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. The Dickens Festival transforms the town.

Local tip

The cathedral is magnificent and free. The castle keep gives extraordinary Medway views. The High Street for outstanding independent shops. The Dickens Festival in June for the full Victorian atmosphere.
