A little history

The Rochdale Pioneers founded the modern Co-operative movement here in 1844. Gracie Fields — England's biggest star of the 1930s — was born here. The town hall, completed in 1871, is magnificent.

Local tip

The Pioneers Museum in Toad Lane tells the remarkable story of the Co-op — free and genuinely fascinating. The town hall exterior is extraordinary. The canal towpath for walking.
