A little history

One of England's oldest cities — a cathedral city since the 7th century. The market square's obelisk dates from 1702. Each evening at 9pm, the Hornblower has blown at the four corners of the Market Cross since 886 AD.

Local tip

The nightly horn blowing at 9pm is a genuine piece of living history. Fountains Abbey is one of England's great experiences — go early or late. The market on Thursday is excellent.
