About Ringwood

Known for

The Monmouth connection (the Duke of Monmouth was captured near here in 1685 after the Battle of Sedgemoor), the New Forest gateway, the Thursday market, and a Hampshire market town with good independent character

A little history

The Duke of Monmouth — who led the ill-fated Monmouth Rebellion against James II — was captured hiding in a ditch near Ringwood in 1685, a few days after the Battle of Sedgemoor. He was taken to London and executed. The town is an excellent gateway to the New Forest National Park.

Local tip

The New Forest from Ringwood is outstanding — cycling and walking in Europe's finest ancient forest. The Thursday market for local Hampshire produce. The town centre for independent shops. The Avon Valley for fishing.
